Eco Warriors and Sustainability
Eco Warriors Overview
At Selby Abbey Primary School, our Eco Warriors play a key role in championing sustainability and protecting the environment. These passionate pupils lead a variety of eco-friendly initiatives, including tree planting, composting, recycling, reducing waste and conserving energy throughout the school.
Through hands-on projects, regular meetings and whole-school campaigns, our Eco Warriors inspire the entire school community to think green and act responsibly. We are proud to nurture a strong sense of environmental stewardship in our children, helping them develop lifelong habits that contribute to a more sustainable future.
What It’s Like to Be an Eco Warrior?
Being an Eco Warrior is exciting and full of adventure! You’ll be part of a team that helps protect the planet, starting right at your school. Whether it’s saving energy, reducing waste or looking after nature, you’ll lead cool projects and inspire others to go green. It’s a great way to make a difference and have fun while doing it!
Environmental Awareness
As an Eco Warrior, one of your most important jobs is to help other pupils learn about how to take care of the planet. You’ll teach everyone about things like recycling, saving energy and cutting down on waste. You might make colourful posters, help lead school assemblies or run fun eco-campaigns to get everyone involved. You’ll also keep the school’s Eco-Board up to date with cool facts, helpful tips and ideas for how we can all make a difference – every little action counts!
Sustainability Projects
As an Eco Warrior, you’ll lead awesome projects that help make our school cleaner and greener! You might organize litter-picking days, help plant trees or run fun recycling challenges. You’ll also keep an eye on how much energy and water is being used in classrooms and encourage your friends to use less and be more eco-friendly. Plus, you’ll get your hands dirty (in a good way!) by helping to plant and care for school/community gardens or other green spaces. It’s all about working together to protect our planet!
Meetings and Teamwork
As an Eco Warrior, you’ll have regular meet-ups with the Eco Lead Teacher, Ms Broxup, to chat about your projects and share awesome new ideas. These meetings are a great time to bring your notebook, jot down plans and make sure everyone knows what to do next. You’ll also get to team up with other student groups to work on big eco-friendly goals together. When we all join forces, we can make an even bigger difference for our school and the planet!
Leadership and Being a Role Model
As an Eco Warrior, you’re a leader and that means setting a great example for others! By making smart, earth-friendly choices every day, you’ll show your classmates how to take care of the planet too. Wearing your Eco Warrior badge proudly lets everyone know you’re someone who cares and takes action. You’ll help encourage your friends to recycle, use less and join in on fun eco activities that make a real difference!
How Eco-Warriors Are Chosen?
At our school, we encourage pupil voice and responsibility through our Eco-Warrior programme. Here’s how representatives are selected:
- Pupils in Key Stage 2 are invited to apply and take part in a short interview, where they share their passion for environmental issues and explain why they would make a good Eco-Warrior.
- Each KS2 class selects two representatives to join the Eco-Warrior team.
- The Eco-Warriors meet regularly to discuss environmental matters, plan sustainability projects and report back to their classes with updates and ideas.
